There are two search facilities available on our site, Search the Web and Site Search.
Search the Web is available by clicking the world on the navigation bar, clicking "Search" then "Search WWW" on the navigation bar or by clicking the world on the home page. All of these will take you to a list of search engines.
To use them click into one of the blank boxes and begin typing your search terms separated by spaces. Then press RETURN on your keyboard or click "Search Engine Name", where "Engine Name" is the name of the search engine. The results will then be displayed on the search engine's own page and you will have left the Ellon Academy Web. To return to the Ellon Academy Web, click "Back" in your web browser.
Alternatively, you can click the search engine logo to take you straight to their home page (again, you will then have left the Ellon Academy Web).
If you want help on a specific search engine, click "Help & Hints" and the search engine's help page will open up beside the navigation bar. Please note that the help page that opens is not part of the Ellon Academy Web.
If you want to include a complete phrase in a search, use quotation marks.
Example:
"Ellon Academy Web" would return results only where the words Ellon, Academy and Web appeared in that sequence. However, without quotation marks, all pages containing Ellon, Academy and Web would appear, no matter what the order.
To view results that don't contain a specific word, use the minus character.
Example:
Ellon Academy Web -searching would return results of pages containing Ellon, Academy and Web in any order, but without the word searching. This page (that you are reading right now) would not show up. It contains the word "searching".
If you want to search for the occurrence of one word or another, then you can use the OR operator.
Example:
Academy OR School would return results where the word academy or school appear. This basically tells the search engine that the results don't need to have both the search terms.
Some search engines remove common words like "and", if these words are essential to your search, you can include them by using the plus character.
Example:
Art +and Design would return results containing all three words in any order. Quotation marks, however, can be used in many of these situations.
These search terms can also be combined to produce even more specific results.
Example:
"Ellon Academy Web" home -copyright this will return results with the words Ellon Academy Web (in that order), home and not include copyright. Our Copyright and Legal Information page would not be shown in the results even though it has the word "home" on it because it also has the word "copyright".
This facility is for searching the Ellon Academy Web. It can be accessed through Search > Search Site on the navigation bar.
Please Note: This site search only searches through internet content. i.e. Anything that can not be seen from outside the school will not appear in the search results.
To use this facility, simply enter your search terms into the box provided (The search box uses the same techniques as described above) and click "Find". You will then be redirected to another web site that is not part of the Ellon Academy Web and therefore one we are not responsible for. Your search results will be displayed on this other web site.
Results are listed in groups of ten and sorted by relevance.
On the results page, you have several options. You can click a page name to jump to it, you can redefine your search, start a new search or search the web using FreeFind's search engine. If you wish to return to the previous page, simply click the "Back" arrow in the navigation bar on the left.
Our Site Search is provided by FreeFind.
